Summary
Bar codes provide a way to print machine readable numbers & letters. This is a good way to link online and offline information using a method that greatly input errors do to typing.
[edit]
Input
- Bar code scanners generate letters and numbers from a bar code. The way that information is passed to the computer depends on the type of scanner and how it is setup. In many cases scanning a bar code using a scanner connected to a computer is the same as typing in the letters and numbers by hand. That means anywhere you can enter in information into RPM, you scan in information from a bar code.
- Best practice: Setup your scanner in a "keyboard wedge" configuration where scanning a barcode is the same as typing the letters and numbers by hand. Also setup the scanner to follow the numbers & letters with an "Enter" key press. This is the default for many scanners. With this setup you can bring up a page like "Select a form" where the "Search by number" field has focus by default. Scanning a form number bar code (like from an RPM label, see below) will then cause that form to be brought up on the screen.

Output
RPM can print form numbers as a "3 of 9" bar code on form labels.
