Summary

Tips for using RPM with multiple browser windows and tabs.

Same user

Using RPM in multiple browser windows at once can be a time saver. For example, if you need to edit multiple agencies, keep the agencies view open and bring up each agency by right clicking on the name in the list and selecting "Open in New Window" (IE 6, similar in other browsers).

The session

The key to this is the concept of your logon session. When you logon to RPM your browser is given a logon token for that domain name (Example: agentrpm.com). The specific behavior of the windows and when they share depends on the browser you are using(see below)

  • Logging off in any window will also log off all other windows in that session.

Browser differences

  • IE 6
    • Windows opened from an existing window share a session. In contrast, new windows opened by starting IE 6 again are separate.
  • IE 7
    • Windows and tabs opened from an existing window or tab share a session. In contrast, new windows opened by starting IE 6 again are separate.
    • All tabs within a window share a session
  • Firefox
    • All windows and tabs share a session regardless of where they were opened from.

Different users

In some rare cases you may want to logon to RPM as different users at the same time. This is something we occasionally do at RPM for support.

  • You must ensure the session is different or only the latest logon will apply.
  • That means it is impossible to logon as different users on the same domain name at the same time with Firefox
  • Different domain names are always different sessions, even in different tabs in the same window.

Shared session quirks

  • Some pages rely on the session and may behave strangely if used in more than one window at once.
    • Example: Edit views
  • Some defaults are set in the session, like the last supplier viewed. So, selecting a supplier in one window will make it the default supplier for pages that use that in the other windows.
